October 2024 will mark the first Simchat Torah since the devastating events of October 7, 2023. As Israel and the Jewish people continue to struggle, how can we honor those we’ve lost, and still rejoice in the Torah?
We at Young Israel of Kendall are joining 1,600 synagogues around the world by getting a new me’il (Torah Cover) to be used during Simchat Torah. The me’il is beautifully designed to mark the first yahrzeit of October 7th and is dedicated in memory of the more than 1,200 souls lost on October 7th and to the IDF soldiers and hostages who have died since; Al Kiddush Hashem. Each me’il is embroidered with the name of one of the kedoshim (holy souls/victims) we’ve lost.
The Jewish world will be unified, knowing that across the globe, Jews are dancing with Torah scrolls that link us not just to each other, but to those whose lives were forever changed on October 7th. This project will symbolize our resilience, our ability to find hope in the face of tragedy, and will serve as a testament that, “Am Yisrael Lives.”
Yes, with Hashem’s help, with hope, we will dance. Time is marching on. We must extend ourselves to remember, recharge, continue to remember and forge forward. Join us in our efforts. Every contribution of $540 to Young Israel of Kendall – me’il project will be recognized on our Tree of Life with a leaf, appropriately engraved, “Am Yisrael Chai” along with the donor’s name. Every Donor contribution of $180 will have their name listed in our Simchat Torah flyer.
